Buyer's Guide: Cat Harness And Leash

Cat Harness And Leash Reviews - Get Used To A Change In Everyday Life

If you are going on vacation with your cat you will need to know how to properly take care of him while you are away. Often, many cat owners who go on vacation will use the basic harness and leash setup in their hotel rooms. In this article, we will discuss some of the reasons why you should never use the basic harness and leash setup in your hotel room. As we go through these reasons, you will find that the cat harness and leash option in your hotel room can be very dangerous for your cat.

The first reason is that the basic harness and leash comes off quickly during travel. This happens because Velcro is not a strong material. When Velcro begins to loosen it will become very easy to tear apart. The buyers guide for this product states that if you do get your cat into a scenario where he has to rip out the Velcro, the cat should be securely held by the harness.

Second, the sizing chart is not very accurate. The chart states that the leash and harness should be one size fits most. However, the sizing chart is only telling you how large the harness should be. It does not tell you what type of clothing your cat would wear. Most people who use this sizing chart are women who tend to be larger busted women.

This brings up another important point. Many of these harnesses are not meant for wear under clothing. Some of these harnesses have very tiny buckles which don't even cover the neck area. Women who wear these type of harnesses could poke themselves very easily if they choose to wear a tank top. Since the sizing chart does not specify that the wear under a tank top will be covered, a woman could wear a very large harness and then get her butt in the air and twist the bottoms to make it impossible for him to sit down!

Another very important point about these types of collars is the safety issues. If a cat slips out from his harness he can potentially injure himself. If he slips out while you are trying to tie him up he could possibly injure you as well. Therefore these products have very serious design flaws.

Now onto the cons. One major con is that the cats will fight with each other for the handles. This can be dangerous for the cats as well. I have watched cats actually bite the handles of these harnesses. Personally I have never seen a cat bite a handle, however I have watched it happen in my own cat's mouth and I just laughed because it happens.

The sizing options on these collars are also poor. If you have a medium or small cat they usually will not fit properly. These sizing options should be changed to larger sizes for your cat.

The quick-release buckles are another problem area. You have to manually open the buckle so that you can take your cat in and out of it comfortably. Most of these come with two adjustable straps; however only one is really comfortable for your cat. It has a rubberized strap that doesn't really give your cat any comfort at all. The adjustable straps are a nice feature; however the comfort for your cat largely depends on how comfortable he is with the harness itself.

Another area that can leave you scratching your head is the price of the harness. I don't know if it is the quality of the materials being used, the sizing or even the manufacturing process, but most are very expensive. I have seen many different brands over the years and some of them cost up to $50. Many of the expensive ones are well worth it though. There are several cheaper ones available though. The reason most of them aren't as comfortable or have as good of an impact on your cat is that they don't last that long and you end up replacing them every few months.

The last update I will go over is that none of the harnesses are washable. I have tried washing them, but they end up looking like they were made for the cat laundry. The Velcro straps on the harnesses do wear out and come loose, but you can't just put them in the washing machine. They will lose their comfortable grip. This is the biggest complaint about them.

In short, there are plenty of options for cat wear that won't break the bank and don't require that much cleaning. If you want something more comfortable, they are available. If you want something to wear around the house, then the basic harnesses are great. However, if you want to pamper your cat while adding a little style, the new styles of dog harnesses and leash attachments will do the trick!
